What is Rare Standard?

Rare Standard is the brainchild of saxophonist Timothy Gay and drummer Doug Austin. Formed in 2010 in Detroit, Michigan, the name came from the idea to play rare jazz songs nobody would play, however, over time, the approach shifted to moving the art forward and creating a new standard. They formed the group around versatile musicians with various musical backgrounds and influences. With that, the group produces a unique sound that carries the banner of creative music from the city of Detroit.

Rare Standard is creating a movement with their brand of jazz called “Modern-Progressive Jazz.” Nicknamed “The Revolution,” combining the culture of the classic jazz masters with the fierce energy of fusion and the experimental edge of modern jazz artists like Robert Glasper, they look to blaze a new trail in jazz while making the classic sound new again.
